The "International symposium on Biochar Research, Development and Application" was held from Oct. 10 to 15, 2011. It was co-organized by State Key Laboratory of Soil and Sustainable Agriculture, Jiangsu Biochar Engineering Center, Institute of Soil Science and Reaserch Center of Clean Energy and Power. The symposium was chaired by symposium general secretary Xie Zubin. Under the authorization of the general director Shen Renfang of the Institute of Soil Science, Chinese Academy of Science.
There were more than 120 participants in the symposium, coming from universities, institutes and industries of China, United States of America, Australia, United Kingdom of Great Britain, Denmark, Japan and New Zealand. Participants gave reports on biochar research, development and application at the area of soil science, agronomy, energy science and biochar production technique and interacted actively with each other. Participants especially reported the progresses of biochar on soil productivity enhancement, greenhouse gases emission, soil carbon turnover, pollution water treatment, heavy metal remediation, organic pollutant degradation, snow melting and non-point pollution. The symposium discussed the guideline of biochar standard, put forward exiting problems and further research directions. The participants visited the field plot experimental site of the institute of soil science in Jiangdu city, the biochar production facility and the State Key Laboratory of Soil and Sustainable Agriculture and soil museum. The holding of the biochar symposium would plan an important role on biocahr's further research and domestic, international cooperation.
