Dr. Tiedje is University Distinguished Professor of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics and of Plant, Soil and Microbial Sciences, and is Director of the Center for Microbial Ecology, at Michigan State University. His research focuses on microbial ecology, physiology and diversity, especially regarding the nitrogen cycle, biodegradation of environmental pollutants and more recently on the use of genomics and metagenomics to understand speciation, community structure and functions. He has served as Editor-in-Chief of Applied and Environmental Microbiology and Editor of Microbial and Molecular Biology Reviews. He has over 500 refereed publications with citations of >70,000 and h-index 134. He has trained 150 Ph.D. students, postdoctor and visiting researchers from over 30 countries.

Dr. Tiedje is recognized as the founder of modern microbial ecology. He founded the International Society of Microbial Ecology and was President of the American Society for Microbiology. He served on the Board on Life Sciences of the National Research Council and Co-Chaired the Committee on the New Science of Metagenomics report. He served on the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s Science Advisory Panel, on Department of Energy’s Biological and Environmental Research Advisory Committee. He shared the 1992 Finley Prize from United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for research contributions in microbiology of international significance and was awarded an Einstein Professorship in 2010 by the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
