As one member unit of the five disciplinary sub-centers of the Chinese Ecosystem Research Network (CERN), the Soil Sub-Center (SSC) was established in 1992 to implement quality assurance and quality control for long term soil observation of CERN. The SSC is basically to carry out various scientific activities required by the CERN on the quality control for long-term observation of soil quality changes, including the development of soil observation protocols, the calibration of monitoring equipment, the technical training, the collection and assessment of soil data with quality control, and the construction of soil database and long-term archives of soil samples. Additionally, the SSC is to research on the nutrient cycling in agro-ecosystem on regional and national scale, and the spatial-temporal changes of soil quality and their driving factors.
