Soil amendment of biochar pyrolyzed from agricultural wastes (straw, residues etc.) is becoming a hot topic on the adaptation of global change. The biochar production facilities that can be bought in the China's market, such as Mufflefurnace and industrial oven, are not airtight and too small or too large. Professor Zubin Xie (zbxie@issas.ac.cn) and his group from the Institute of Soil Science successfully redesigned and built a biochar oven. The biochar oven is airtight, fit for laboratory and of wide-range temperature controlling system. The produced biochar is of stable properties and has been accepted as an experimental material by his colleagues and German scientists.
